As Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the legislation will save society from the harmful effects of online money games.

In a post on X, PM Modi said that this legislation will encourage e-sports and online social games.

“This Bill, passed by both Houses of Parliament, highlights our commitment towards making India a hub for gaming, innovation and creativity. It will encourage e-sports and online social games. At the same time, it will save our society from the harmful effects of online money games,” PM Modi said.

Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill’ amid protests and sloganeering by the Opposition.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had moved ‘The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill’ as passed by the Lok Sabha for consideration and passing in the Rajya Sabha.

Highlighting the provisions of the Bill, the Union Minister Ashwani Vaishnaw stated that it comprises three segments, “E-sports, Online Social Gaming, and Online Money Gaming”, out of which 2/3rd the segment (E-sports and Online Social Gaming) will be promoted and encouraged.

The Union Minister described the third segment, Online Money Gaming, as a “public health risk”.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday articulated the purpose behind the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, highlighting a multi-year engagement process with the gaming industry.

Speaking to ANI about the bill, Vaishnaw emphasised the government’s efforts over the past three years, where they were “deeply engaged” with the gaming industry.

The Monsoon Session, 2025 of Parliament, which commenced on July 21, has been adjourned sine die on Thursday. (ANI)
