Srinagar, Feb 26: J&K Peoples Conference Senior Vice President and former minister Abdul Gani Vakil on Monday urged the Lt Governor-led administration to address the grievances of daily wagers, Anganwari workers and helpers without delay to end their persistent sufferings.
In a statement issued here, Vakil stressed that the administration should take prompt measures to regularize the daily wagers and casual labourers working in different departments, as well as Anganwari workers and helpers, as they serve the people to the best of their abilities.
Addressing a party workers’ convention at Eidgah Srinagar, Vakil highlighted the issue of occupational hazards faced by daily wagers, particularly those working in the Power Development Department (PDD). “The implementation of an insurance policy remains vital as several PDD daily wagers lost their lives or sustained permanent injuries due to electric shocks while diligently performing their duties,” he said.
The former minister expressed disappointment over the non-existence of a dedicated insurance policy or government scheme to support the affected families of daily wagers facing such unfortunate incidents.
“Only a representative elected government can ensure overall and equitable development, saying the Peoples Conference will usher in an era of holistic development,” he said, adding, “True progress can only be achieved through an elected government that represents the will of the people. Our leadership is committed to being that voice and delivering the kind of good governance that our state deserves and the people of Jammu and Kashmir have yearned for.”
Eidgah Constituency head and Provincial Secretary of JKPC Mohammad Irfan Matoo, who presided over the convention, highlighted the pressing issue of escalating unemployment among youth in J&K leading to a concerning rise in drug dependency.
Vakil appealed to the UT administration and Central government to devise and implement a comprehensive employment policy which would help eradicate the drug menace.
