Emotions are a fundamental part of human being. They hold a significant place in the human experience profoundly shaping our perceptions, relationships and overall well-being. Emotional suppression refers to the conscious or unconscious act of inhibiting or holding back our emotional experience. It occurs when individuals consciously, control minimize or hide their emotions. There can be so many reasons behind the “Why” of emotion suppression. It is often influenced by cultural and societal norms, fear of vulnerability, coping mechanisms, past childhood experiences, professional or social demands and emotional avoidance. While it can be useful in certain situations, seeming like a way to maintain, control or avoid conflicts but long-term suppression can have seriously adverse and detrimental effects on our mental and physical well-being.
Suppressing emotions can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and even physical health effects on mental health including emotional numbness, difficulty in relationships, increased stress and higher risk of depression and anxiety. All these occur as a result of emotion suppression which in turn can drastically affect almost all spheres of an individual’s life thus rendering him or her disturbed. It can strain relationships, hinder personal growth, and create a sense of disconnection from our authentic selves.
We should always keep this thing in mind those emotions in no way are a sign of weakness rather they are a sign of being human. Suppressing them only leads to further suffering .The more we suppress them, the more they control us. Our emotions are meant to be acknowledged, felt and released. Suppressing them only creates internal chaos.
