Kulgam, Jan 22: Police on Monday arrested two drug peddlers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district and recovered eight kilograms of a poppy straw-like substance from them.
A police spokesperson said the district police in Kulgam, under the close supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sahil Sarangal, is making every effort to apprehend drug peddlers and bring them to justice.
He said a police party from Police Station Qazigund, during patrolling, observed two suspicious individuals at Sumo Stand Qazigund. The individuals were identified as Ashfaq Ahmad Rather, son of Abdul Majeed Rather, resident of Chalyar, Chenani, and Mohd Sharif Bani, son of Mohd Jabroo, resident of Nagulta, Chenani.
“They were carrying two nylon bags and attempted to flee upon noticing the police party. They were tactfully chased and apprehended by the alert police party,” the spokesperson said, adding that following a search, officers recovered 8 kilograms of poppy straw-like contraband substance from their possession.
A case, vide FIR No. 21/2024 U/S 8/15, 29 of NDPS Act, has been registered in Police Station Qazigund, and the investigation is underway, the police spokesperson said, adding, “We urge community members to come forward with any information or dial 112 regarding anti-social activity in their neighbourhood so that timely action can be taken against the culprits.”
