RESPONSIBLE USAGE

In today’s digital age, mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives. These devices provide us with instant connectivity, access to information, and endless entertainment possibilities. However, the increasing use of mobile phones among children has raised concerns about their impact on physical and mental health. In particular, a disturbing trend has emerged in Kashmir, where parents are giving their children mobile phones to watch reels or other content during meal times. This habit not only reflects a lack of responsibility towards the children’s basic needs but also has serious consequences for their overall wellbeing.

One of the major health concerns associated with excessive mobile phone use is the potential loss of eyesight. The strain on the eyes caused by prolonged exposure to screens, particularly at close proximity, can result in long-term damage. It is alarming to think that children are being subjected to this risk at such an early age. Parents must understand the importance of protecting their children’s eyesight and take measures to limit their screen time. Excessive screen time can impair a child’s ability to form and retain memories. Scientific studies have shown that prolonged use of mobile phones can have a negative impact on cognitive development, which can hinder a child’s educational progress in the long run. It is crucial for parents to recognize the long-term consequences of allowing their children unlimited access to mobile phones and take steps to ensure a balanced lifestyle.

Although some parents may argue that giving their children mobile phones during meal times helps control their behavior or allows them to focus on their own tasks without distractions, these short-term benefits come at a high cost. By depriving children of the opportunity to interact and bond with their parents during meal times, we are compromising their emotional and social development. Parent-child bonding is crucial for fostering healthy relationships and nurturing emotional connections. By replacing this time with mindless scrolling, we are robbing our children of these essential human interactions that are vital for their growth and wellbeing.

Addressing this issue requires collective action from schools, community organizations, and government bodies. Awareness campaigns and parenting workshops should be organized to educate parents about the negative effects of excessive screen time on children’s health. Guidelines and strategies for responsible phone usage should be provided to ensure that children’s wellbeing is prioritized. In addition, parents need to take charge of their children’s screen time and ensure that they engage in other healthy activities such as outdoor play and quality family time. By setting limits and encouraging alternative forms of entertainment, parents can protect their children from the dark side of mobile phones. The ill effects of mobile phones on children’s health are a matter of great concern, as evidenced by the disturbing trend in Kashmir.

It is our collective responsibility as a society to prioritize the wellbeing of our children over convenience. By taking proactive measures to limit their exposure to mobile phones and provide healthier alternatives, we can ensure that our youngest generation grows up in a bright and healthy environment.
