Srinagar, May 25: The bicycle sharing system recently introduced in Srinagar city has experienced an astounding triumph, with over 10,000 registered users within its initial days, as the number of rides continues to rise.
Launched at multiple locations across Srinagar city, the bicycle sharing system has rapidly gained popularity, receiving high praise from locals who perceive it as a significant stride towards fostering an eco-friendly urban environment.
Athar Amir Khan, the CEO of Smart City, shared, “A few days ago, we initiated the public bicycle sharing program in Srinagar under the umbrella of Srinagar Smart City. Yesterday, the project achieved its first significant milestone, with an impressive 1,000 rides undertaken in a single day, covering a distance of over 2,000 kilometers. Today, the number of registered users surpassed 10,000.”
Shamim Ahmad, a resident and avid cyclist from Lal Chowk, expressed his enthusiasm for the system during an interview with Rising Kashmir. He acknowledged that the bicycle sharing system presented locals with a marvelous opportunity to ride bicycles without the burden of purchasing one. He further revealed that the system is diligently monitored to ensure uninterrupted service for the people of Srinagar.
The primary objective of the project, according to the CEO of Smart City, is to endorse eco-friendly modes of transportation while mitigating traffic congestion in the city. This initiative marks a significant step towards establishing a sustainable and intelligent urban landscape in Srinagar. A growing number of individuals are already embracing the service, indicating its surging popularity among the populace.
“The bicycles are user-friendly, cost-effective, and offer a convenient and eco-friendly alternative for commuters. Equipped with GPS tracking devices, the bicycles can be unlocked via a mobile application, ensuring the users’ security,” affirmed the CEO.
Not only does the bicycle sharing system offer convenient transportation, but it also contributes to reducing air pollution, fostering a cleaner and healthier atmosphere in the city.
The triumphant reception of the bicycle sharing system in Srinagar has garnered applause from citizens, environmentalists, and urban planners. They firmly believe that the system’s success will inspire a larger segment of the population to adopt green transportation options, thereby curbing air pollution.
The district administration has assured the public that more such initiatives will be launched in the future. Plans are underway to expand the public transportation system by introducing additional buses, electric buses, auto-rickshaws, and water taxis.
