Srinagar, Oct 27: Srinagar city has been awarded the “Award of Excellence in Urban Transport” at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Awards, recognizing it as the “City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System.”
Conferred by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the award was received by CEO Smart City Limited’s (SSCL) Dr Owais Ahmed.
In a telephonic conversation with Rising Kashmir from Gujrat, Owais hailed the award as a milestone in Srinagar’s urban development. “The award was conferred for creating a city that is not only accessible but also encourages healthier, eco-friendly modes of transport,” he said.
He said that initiatives of SSCL included a 100-km upgrade of key roads with dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths, improved lighting, and enhanced public amenities.
Key roadways, including Maulana Azad Road and Residency Road, along with public spaces like Srinagar Square (Lal Chowk) and the Jhelum Riverfront, have been transformed to include plazas, cafes, and promenades, he said.
Owais said that the upgrades are part of a broader mobility strategy that places the needs of people at its core. “We’ve seen a significant increase in foot traffic and a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions due to our commitment to high-quality, people-centric urban transport,” he noted.
He said that development under SSCL’s program has been the launch of a Public Bicycle System with 1,000 bicycles and 200 electric bikes stationed across 180 locations. “Our aim is to offer diverse options for eco-friendly, efficient travel within the city, which supports both local tourism and the economy,” he added.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha congratulated Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) for winning the “Award of Excellence in Urban Transport.”
He said that recognized as the “City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System,” the award celebrates SSCL’s success in making Srinagar more eco-friendly and accessible.
“Srinagar’s recognition as the best city for non-motorized transport reaffirms our commitment to sustainable mobility and improving quality of life,” he added.
LG said that the initiatives have transformed the city, creating a safer, pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly environment that supports both residents and visitors.
