In a major effort to tackle the rising menace of drug abuse, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain Tuesday said that in the year 2024 police have achieved a major success in its fight against drugs.

Speaking at a press conference today as per news agency KINS, Hussain disclosed that the police have registered 94 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this year.

Furthermore, 156 individuals have been detained, and 26 more have been booked under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

SSP said the severity of the drug issue in Srinagar, calling it one of the most pressing challenges for law enforcement. “While the police have successfully curbed terrorism to a large extent, the drug menace continues to be a significant concern,” he stated.

The SSP added that the police are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to dismantle drug networks and bring offenders to justice.

In addition to law enforcement, Imtiyaz Hussain urged civil society, parents, and educational institutions to play a proactive role in preventing drug abuse among youth. “Fighting the drug menace requires collective action. Public awareness and cooperation are crucial for achieving long-term success,” he noted.

The Srinagar Police have also intensified their surveillance and community outreach programs to identify hotspots and educate the public about the dangers of drug addiction. The SSP reaffirmed the department’s commitment to ensuring a drug-free Srinagar. (KINS)
