New Delhi, Aug 03: Shreya Gupta, a young fencer from Jammu and Kashmir, has once again demonstrated her prowess on the national stage by securing a bronze medal in the recently concluded Khelo India Women Fencing League, this year branded as the ASMITA League (Achievement of Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women through Action).
Held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi from July 27 to July 31, 2024, the league saw Shreya clinch a bronze medal in the senior women’s sabre category, accompanied by a cash prize of ₹30,000. Additionally, she earned a ₹10,000 prize for finishing fifth in the junior sabre category.
In her path to the bronze, Shreya delivered an impressive performance, defeating Miss Somya of Kerala with a score of 15-5 and Miss Shruti Joshi of Maharashtra with a score of 15-8 in the pre-medal and medal bouts, respectively. However, in the semifinals, she faced a narrow defeat against Gauri Solanki of Maharashtra, with the bout ending at 15-13.
Shreya’s consistent excellence in fencing was also evident in the previous edition of the Khelo India competition in 2023, where she secured gold medals in both junior and senior categories. Recently, she added to her accolades with an individual bronze and a team silver at the Commonwealth Championship held in New Zealand.
Ms. Nuzhat Gull, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, praised Shreya’s achievements, stating, “Her excellent performance at national and international levels shall motivate the young sportspersons of Jammu and Kashmir.” She emphasized that the JK UT administration is dedicated to enhancing infrastructure, equipment, and support for athletes, fostering a conducive environment for sports.
Secretary Gull also commended the efforts of J&K Sports Council coach Shotu Lal Sharma, whose guidance has been instrumental in elevating the performance of fencers at both national and international levels.
Shreya Gupta’s achievements continue to inspire and set a benchmark for aspiring athletes in Jammu and Kashmir.
