Ganderbal, Sep 25:  A young man Shabir Ahmad from Ganderbal has been selected for national level competition in powerlifting that will be held on October 08 this year in Mumbai. Referred to as the “iron man” in his small village LatieGundroshan of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Shabir Ahmad is the second person from Ganderbal district who is going out of UT to play for national level in Powerlifting.
Formerly living in Kujar, GanderbalArifa Bilal has already won a gold medal in powerlifting. She was the first female powerlifter gold medalist at national level.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Shabir Ahmad said, “I express my gratitude to Almighty Allah who bestowed me with all the success. After that, my parents and family who always supported me in my endeavours,” he said.
“I started attending different championships and won 3 gold medals at the state level and more than 5 gold medals at district level. It increased my confidence,” added Shabir.
There are only 2 boys in Jammu and Kashmir that have been selected for national level in Powerlifting, he told Rising Kashmir.
It was not easy to select at the national level but due to my strength and physical well-being I was selected, he said.
Shabir’s mentor said that it’s a proud moment that his student has been selected at the national level in powerlifting.
“It makes us, along with the whole vicinity, feel proud. Everyone is immensely happy that the youth are no longer a burden but an inspiration,” he said.
He appeals to the District Admin, Ganderbal to support him and gives him financial support because he needs a uniform and also some other things.
Meanwhile, DDC vice-chairperson ShallabugGanderbal awarded him with a cash prize of ten thousand rupees.
