Awantipora, Nov 18: The Department of Economics, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) concluded a two-day national seminar titled A Walk from Care to Wage Economy through the Pathway of the Unorganised Sector. Sponsored by the National Commission for Women (NCW), the seminar brought together prominent scholars, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the pivotal role of the unorganised sector in empowering women.
The seminar featured engaging discussions on critical topics, including gender representation in media, the challenges of workplace violence, social security for women in unorganised sectors, and pathways for women’s economic empowerment. Case studies from industries like tourism and hand embroidery in Jammu and Kashmir highlighted the untapped potential and resilience of women in these sectors. Participants also deliberated on policy strategies to ensure inclusivity, safety, and economic resilience for women across diverse sectors.
In his address, Prof. S.M. Shafi, Head Department of Economics, underlined IUST’s commitment to fostering dialogues that contribute to gender equity and socio-economic advancement, while Dr. Mehak Majeed, Seminar convenor emphasized on the urgent need for collaborative efforts to bridge gender gaps in economic participation. The seminar reflects IUST’s ongoing dedication to addressing critical socio-economic challenges and promoting inclusive growth and gender equality through academic and policy-oriented initiatives.
