The recovery occurred when a police team, working under the supervision of Additional SP Kathua and SHO PS Lakhanpur, set up a naka at the Despatch Point near the Statue of Maharaja Gulab Singh.
The officers intercepted a Creta car, with registration number HR98J-9889, as part of the routine surveillance. The vehicle was coming from Delhi to Srinagar. Upon thorough inspection of the vehicle, a significant amount of cash—Rs 3.36 crore—was discovered hidden inside.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua, Sobit Saxena, confirmed the arrest of the two individuals and the recovery of the cash. He added that both the police and the Income Tax Department have launched a detailed investigation into the matter. “So far, no terror angle has come to fore. We are investigating all angles. Things will be clear soon,” he said. “Both persons have been arrested and they are being questioned. They belong to Kashmir.” Authorities are probing the origin of the money, and whether it is linked to any illicit activities such as money laundering or smuggling.
