Srinagar, Jan 01: In anticipation of heavy snowfall, the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Ltd (KPDCL) has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and efficiency of its linemen. The corporation has provided its workforce across the Valley with essential repair and safety gear, including ladders, ropes, shock-proof gloves, helmets, and link rods. These tools are vital for quickly restoring power lines that may be affected by snow accumulation, ensuring the safety of both the workers and the power supply.

This move follows concerns highlighted by Rising Kashmir regarding a shortage of crucial safety equipment for linemen tasked with repairing high-tension lines and circuits during heavy snowfall. As severe snowstorms, like the one on December 28, disrupt power, linemen often find themselves working under dangerous conditions without essential tools such as link rods and shock-proof gloves.

In an exclusive statement to Rising Kashmir, KPDCL’s Chief Engineer, Auqib Sultana Waheed Deva, assured that the majority of linemen have now been equipped with the necessary tools. “We have prioritized the distribution of ladders, shock-proof gloves, and other safety gear to ensure the well-being of our staff. While a few are still awaiting equipment, we are working swiftly to provide everything as quickly as possible,” she said.

Linemen have expressed relief at the timely provision of these essential tools. Bashir Ahmad, a lineman from Srinagar, emphasized the dangerous nature of working on high-tension lines in snowy conditions. “We were managing without proper tools, which put our lives at risk. Now, with the new safety equipment, we feel more secure and can focus on restoring power without fear,” he said.

Altaf Hussain, a lineman from Pulwama, also praised the new safety gear, saying, “The shock-proof gloves and ladders have made a significant difference. It’s reassuring to know our safety is being prioritized, and this will help us respond faster during emergencies.”

Sajad Ahmed, a lineman from Valtengoo, Kulgam, highlighted the challenges of climbing 15-20 foot poles to repair lines during or after snowfall. “Ladders and link rods are essential. We are waiting eagerly for the equipment to arrive, especially with predictions of heavy snowfall from January 3 to January 6,” he said.

The KPDCL’s initiative is seen as a critical step in addressing the ongoing concerns of linemen who work tirelessly in harsh winter conditions. As Kashmir braces for more snow, these measures are expected to ensure both the safety of workers and the timely restoration of electricity for residents across the Valley.
