Srinagar, Sep 01: Chairman Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) and former minister Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has urged the Centre to announce assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir without further delay, saying India was one of the biggest democracies in the world.
“Since Centre has admitted in Supreme Court that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved considerably and all the required formalities for holding assembly elections also stands completed, so there should not be any kind of further delay in this regard,” Hakeem said in a statement issued here.
He said the Centre should also fulfill its promise to restore statehood to J&K before announcing assembly elections, adding that Home Minister Amit Shah has on the floor of the Parliament assured that statehood will be restored to Jammu and Kashmir as early as possible.
The PDF chairman said the restoration of electoral democracy in J&K was imperative to gain the goodwill and trust of the people. He said the restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir prior to holding assembly elections will go a long way in building mutual trust and confidence between the Centre and the people of the UT. The former minister urged the Government of India to fulfill the promises made to the people of J&K.
