Kulgam, May 29:The residents of Chitripora village in the Pahloo area of Kulgam district protested on Wednesday against the Jal Shakti department, alleging that they have been without water supply for over a month.
The residents blocked the Chambagund-Pahloo Road, and demanded the resolution of their issues.
According to residents, the lack of water supply has created significant hardships for them. They highlighted that their local irrigation canal has also dried up, and no measures have been taken to address it.
Mohd Ramzan, a local resident, expressed concern about the difficulties faced by their women and livestock due to the absence of water supply. He emphasized that the neglect of the local canal has exacerbated their situation.
“We urge the concerned department to address these issues promptly and restore water supply to our village,” he appealed.
Nawaz Ahmad, Executive Engineer (Exn) Jal Shakti Department, Kulgam, told Rising Kashmir that with rising temperatures, people often misuse the water supply for their kitchen gardens and other agricultural purposes.
He said the department has intensified its efforts to combat this misuse and has developed a strategy to supply water during peak temperatures to prevent the drinking water supply from being used for agriculture or horticulture.
“Despite these efforts, we continued to provide the supply, and when the situation worsened, we adjusted the timing. Additionally, the local irrigation canal is not charged, which puts maximum stress on the drinking water supply. Now, we will be supplying water to the area according to the new timing schedule,” he added.
