Pulwama, Sept 24: The Fruit Mandi in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district has recorded a significant turnover of ₹55 crore from the sale of fresh pears and apples over the past 20 days.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Ajeet Singh, Area Marketing Officer Pulwama, Horticulture Planning and Marketing Department, mentioned that the Mandi has been bustling with activity due to daily fresh arrivals from various villages.
He explained that the Pricho Fruit Mandi serves as the central market, while the Pachhar Mandi functions as its subsidiary.
Singh revealed that approximately 1.75 lakh boxes of pears and apples were received at the Pachhar Mandi, resulting in a turnover of around ₹15 crore.
He said that around 5.5 lakh boxes were received at the Pricho Fruit Mandi, generating over ₹40 crore.
“Together, both markets have achieved a turnover of ₹55 crore since the start of the fruit season,” he said.
The Area Marketing Officer said that Pulwama is known for producing high-quality fruits, particularly apples and pears, which remain in high demand across various markets in the country.
Singh noted that the competitive market prices have fetched good returns for local traders.
He said that a few days ago, pear boxes were selling for ₹700 to ₹1,400, and apple boxes for ₹800 to ₹1,200.
“However, in recent days, prices have dipped slightly, with pears now selling for ₹700 to ₹900 and apples for ₹700 to ₹850,” he said.
Singh remains optimistic that prices will rise again in the coming days.
He also acknowledged some infrastructure challenges at the Mandi, but assured that ongoing upgrades will ensure the markets operate year-round, facilitating the sale of various fruits and vegetables.
