• IGP Kashmir appeals people not to fall prey to rumour mongers
• NIT, GMC Srinagar suspends class work
Srinagar, June 06: A day after the protest, Srinagar Police on Thursday took cognizance of “blasphemous” post by a student of GMC Srinagar and registered an FIR .
“Police takes cognizance of the incident of posting of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by a student of GMC Srinagar. Upon receipt of communication from GMC Srinagar administration, case FIR No.13/24 u/s 153, 153A, 295A, 505(2) IPC is registered in PS Kara Nagar,” Srinagar Police said in a post on X.
“Common public is appealed to desist from spreading rumours/false information. They shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative act/instigation,” the post said.
Talking to reporters, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi said Police have taken strong note of the posting of sensitive content against religious sentiments.
He assured that strict action will be taken against those found involved in hurting the religious sentiments of any community.
IGP Kashmir said that J&K Police respects all religions and people from various sects and faiths. “We have taken strong note of the incident at GMC Srinagar. A case has been registered and further investigations are ongoing,” he said.
The IGP appealed to people not to fall prey to rumour mongers that could trigger a law and order situation and not to spread rumours.
“We will not allow vested interests to damage the communal fabric in Kashmir and anyone who is found involved in any such manner we will take legal action,” he said.
The move came a day after students, doctors of GMC Srinagar protested against the non-local student, who allegedly put a blasphemous display picture on a messaging app.
Amid anger, the students had demanded strict action against the non-local student for the immoral act, which they said had hurt the sentiments of Muslims.
The Resident Doctors Association GMC Srinagar had also condemned the incident and stated that such incidents imperil the very fabric of societal harmony and mutual respect.
Following the protest and RDA statement, GMC Srinagar had on Wednesday suspended the student and an enquiry was initiated for necessary action under rules.
The GMC Srinagar has issued an order and suspended the class work of undergraduate students from June 06 to June 08, 2024. Similarly, the class work at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar remained suspended on Thursday.
The students of GMC Baramulla in north Kashmir also held a protest against the sensitive content of GMC Srinagar student that hurt religious sentiments of a particular community.
A student witness said that MBBS and Paramedical students gathered at the academic block and demanded strict action against the medical student for the sensitive content.
Meanwhile, National Conference (NC) senior leader Aga Syed Ruhullah, who has won the Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency Seat also condemned the incident.
“This has become a habit of some students in different institutions of Srinagar to post disrespectful contents about the Prophet (SAW). The recent offence from a student in GMC Srinagar is a fresh example,” he said in a post on X.
Ruhullah said these repeated offences cannot be tolerated in any civilised society.
“We give due respect to the religious figures of other religions and we expect the people of other religions to be equally civilised. The Srinagar Administration should take immediate action and book this offender immediately under law. A mere suspension of the student is not enough,” he added.
