Srinagar, Mar 17: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Spokesperson Iqbal Tramboo on Monday accused Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) of disconnecting electricity during Ramazan, calling the alleged move unfair and insensitive to public needs.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Tramboo accused KPDCL of targeting ordinary consumers while allowing several government departments to default on their dues without consequences.
“For the past few weeks, people have been complaining about power cuts during Ramazan,” Tramboo said. “Even though consumers are paying high interest on their electricity bills, KPDCL is cutting power, adding to public hardship during a time when uninterrupted electricity is essential for worship and daily life.”
He alleged that the department’s actions are driven by pressure to meet financial targets. “To achieve government targets, the department is cutting power even though people are urging authorities not to. Families are prioritising electricity bills over their children’s fees due to these harsh measures,” he said.
Tramboo also criticised the high interest rates imposed on overdue bills. “The department charges a 30% interest rate on delayed payments. If they are already collecting such high interest, why are they still disconnecting power?” he asked.
He called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene. “People have voted for you, but did they vote for such unfair practices?” he said, urging the government to provide relief to the public rather than adding to their financial difficulties.
During the press conference, Tramboo also condemned the alleged house arrest of PDP leader Iltija Mufti. Iltija alleged on Monday that authorities prevented her from visiting Kulgam, where the bodies of two young men who had gone missing were recently found.
In a post on X, Iltija said, “Once again the gates of our house have been locked up. Such is the high-handedness that they don’t even have the courtesy to inform us. I wanted to visit Kulgam where dead bodies of two young men who disappeared mysteriously were finally found. What are the authorities trying to hide here?”
Notably, Iltija was recently detained in Jammu while attempting to address a press conference.
