Srinagar, July 01: Director Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) M. Ashraf Ganie on Monday said the institute is working to improve its emergency by making several changes like appointing staff to tackle huge rushof patients.
“We are working on how to make emergency better and tackle the huge rush. We are working on how we can add manpower and make medicines available. We will take the required measures to ensure that the SKIMS emergency is better,” he said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the National Doctors Day event at the institute.
The SKIMS emergency bears a huge brunt of patients across different parts of Kashmir valley and it receives some 900 patients daily.
The day was held under the resonant theme “Healing Hands, Caring Heart”. This year’s event not only highlighted the compassion and dedication intrinsic to medical professionals but also underscored their pivotal role in providing comfort and care to patients.
The director called doctors “real warriors” saying that during the Covid-19 pandemic, they proved that by putting their lives at risk and saving people.
“For us every day is Covid. There are always emergencies in hospitals and medical professionals don’t care for themselves and proved themselves time and again,” he said.
Prof. Ganie requested doctors to do justice with their profession so that no one gets a chance to raise any question mark on the conduct of medical professionals.
He also requested people that they should also maintain patience while they are in hospitals and don’t put hurdles in working rather than cooperate with doctors and the authorities.
The event was attended by luminaries from the medical field, gathering to commemorate SKIMS’ commitment to excellence in healthcare. The event featured enlightening keynote addresses that highlighted SKIMS achievements and set forth a visionary course.
The director underscored SKIMS’ global impact in medical research and education, highlighting the institution’s role in advancing healthcare worldwide.

He announced the establishment of a special award to commend exemplary service among SKIMS’ medical professionals, ensuring their tireless efforts receive due recognition.
Professor Habibullah Zargar, former Principal of GMC Srinagar, commended the profound contributions of medical professionals. Professor Nilofar Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, reiterated her commitment to supporting SKIMS in its endeavors.
Former Directors including Prof. M.S Khroo, Prof. Omar Javid Shah were also present on the occasion and hailed the role of SKIMS in particular and medical professionals in general in the arena of medical sciences across the world.
Dean Medical Faculty SKIMS, Prof Shariq A. Masoodi praised the medical professionals for their incredible work. He emphasized that ethics should form the core of the medical profession and highlighted the importance of communication skills in the medical profession.
