Pulwama, Aug 23: The 9th District Pencak Silat Championship in Pulwama witnessed the participation of over 407 boys and girls from various schools and clubs across the district.
The two-day event, organised by the District Pencak Silat Association Pulwama, took place at Birla Minds Open International School in Galander Pampore.
The event was marked by fierce competition, with participants showcasing their skills in various categories including junior, sub junior and senior categories.
Sajad Ahmad, Head Coach of the Association, expressed his satisfaction with the turnout and the level of talent displayed by the young boys and girls.
He said that Birla Minds Open International School emerged as the overall champion, securing the first position by winning 12 gold medals.
“The National Institute of Martial Arts (NIMA) took second place, while Pampore secured third,” he said, adding that Pulwama headquarter finished at fourth place.
Ahmad highlighted the significance of the championship in identifying and nurturing local talent.
“Our players have been performing exceptionally well, and we are confident the boys and girls who have qualified for state championship will continue to excel ,” he said.
Ahmad also emphasised the importance of training young athletes for national and international events, saying that the association is committed to providing them with the necessary support and resources.
Among the standout performers was Arbeena Mehanaaz, a girl from Pampore who won a gold medal.
She expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to participate and encouraged other girls to take up sports.
“Events like this provide a platform for us to hone our skills. I urge parents to encourage their children, especially girls, to pursue sports as a viable career option,” she said.
The championship not only featured competitive bouts but also included displays of artistic forms, allowing participants to demonstrate their versatility in the martial art.
The event underscored the importance of co-curricular activities in the holistic development of students, emphasising that sports play a crucial role in physical and psychological well-being.
