Jammu, July 22: J&K National Conference on Saturday expressed disappointment over the recent data released by Niti Aayog claiming that one million people from Jammu & Kashmir have been removed from poverty.
The party in a statement raised questions about the authenticity of the data, asserting that it appears to be “manipulated and dubious”, possibly aimed at advancing certain political motives.
In a statement issued here today, Rattan Lal Gupta, provincial president JKNC, Jammu, said he believed that the data released by Niti Aayog misrepresents the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Union Home Minister, during his parliamentary address, had assured the nation of the creation of new employment opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. However, after passing of nearly four years, not a single multinational company has established itself in the region,” he said.
Gupta mentioned that nearly 8 lakh youth registered with the Directorate of Employment are unemployed, with two lakh of them being educated individuals in the state. The escalating unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir is alarming, reaching unprecedented levels, surpassing the national average and causing considerable distress among the populace, he said.
“Furthermore, the industrial sector in J&K is on the verge of closure, with several industries struggling to sustain operations, leading to a crippling impact on the job market. The per capita income in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a significant decline, further exacerbating the economic challenges faced by the people,” he said, adding that such developments are misleading the people and undermining their faith in the government’s promises.
“Another worrisome aspect that challenges the claims made by Niti Aayog is the prevailing inflation in Jammu and Kashmir. The region is currently experiencing the highest-ever inflation era, with essential commodities witnessing sky-high rates. The skyrocketing prices of basic necessities have placed an immense burden on the already marginalized sections of society, further pushing them into poverty,” Gupta added.
In view of the above-mentioned facts, the NC senior leader questioned the credibility and accuracy of the data released by the Niti Aayog regarding poverty alleviation in Jammu & Kashmir. “The stark contrast between the ground reality and their statement raises doubts about the methodology and data used for such claims,” he objected.
The provincial president asked the Niti Aayog to “conduct a comprehensive and unbiased assessment” of the economic and social conditions in Jammu & Kashmir. “It is imperative to address the root causes of poverty and unemployment in the region and devise effective strategies for sustainable development,” he said and asked the government to prioritize job creation and reinvigorate the industrial sector, which is critical for economic growth and stability in J&K.
