Streamlining healthcare : J&K sets up virtual medical boards across GMCs

Srinagar, Mar 31: The Jammu and Kashmir government has established Virtual Medical Boards (VMBs) across Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), appointing specialty-wise coordinators, referral committees, and a research consortium to ensure uniformity, reduce duplication, and strengthen academic and clinical integration across the Union Territory. According to an order issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, sixteen faculty members have been designated as speciality UT-Level Coordinators for the VMBs. They have been tasked with conducting one weekly VMB session (webinar, CME, or case discussion), preparing a monthly academic calendar for their speciality, ensuring participation from

all Government Medical Colleges, facilitating complex case discussions and inter-institutional consultations, and submitting monthly reports to the Health & Medical Education Department. The department has also constituted two referral committees, one each for the Kashmir and Jammu divisions. The Kashmir committee will be headed by Dr Muzaffar Jan, Medical Superintendent, Lal Ded Hospital, Srinagar, along with ten members, while the Jammu committee will be chaired by Dr Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital, GMC Jammu, with eleven members. The referral committees are responsible for streamlining inter-facility referrals, developing referral Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and

ensuring timely escalation of critical cases. The government has also constituted the J&K Research Consortium, which will be headed by Prof (Dr) Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, Chairperson, Director, SKIMS Soura. The consortium includes the MRU Coordinators from SKIMS, GMC Jammu, GMC Srinagar, and AIIMS Jammu as members. The consortium is tasked with promoting multi-centric research, strengthening academic output, and aligning research with the Union Territory’s health priorities. The order states that all VMBs shall be made functional within 15 days of issuance, and any change in specialty allocation shall require prior approval of the government.
