Urges authorities to protect trained media professionals, curb unethical practices
Srinagar, Mar 29: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Uri, Dr Sajjad Shafi, raised concerns in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly over what he described as the growing trend of “self-styled journalists” in the Union Territory, urging authorities to take a firm stand against unethical practices in the media sector. Speaking during the Assembly session, Dr Shafi said that while many reputed journalists have been working with dedication and professionalism for over two decades, a new group of individuals has emerged in recent years who lack both training and ethics. “I know several well-reputed media persons who have been working in this field for
the last 25 years and have upheld the standards of journalism,” he said. “However, after 2019, a different group of self-styled media people has emerged.” The MLA alleged that some of these individuals indulge in blackmailing tactics targeting both the public and government departments. “They are not journalists in the true sense. They resort to blackmail and misuse the platform,” he said. Dr Shafi further pointed out that many of these individuals lack formal education in journalism and operate without understanding the basic principles of the profession. “Those who have studied journalism from universities within Jammu and Kashmir or outside are doing commendable
work and understand the ethics of this field. But these matric-pass individuals claim to be journalists just by carrying a mobile phone and a logo,” he said. Highlighting concerns over misinformation, he added that such individuals often publish content without proper verification. “They do not verify facts or cross-check with officials before publishing, which is dangerous and misleading,” he said. Calling for regulatory measures, the MLA urged the government to protect the rights of trained media professionals. “We need to take a stand on this issue. Those who have formally studied journalism should be given their due rights and recognition,” he added.
