J&K’s Ranji win proud moment: PM Modi

‘Khelo India building strong sports ecosystem across region’

Srinagar, Mar 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed Jammu and Kashmir’s historic Ranji Trophy triumph, calling it a proud moment for the UT and a sign of its growing strength in Indian sports. Speaking in the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister referred to the final played in Hubballi, where Jammu and Kashmir defeated Karnataka under the captaincy of Paras Dogra to clinch their maiden Ranji Trophy title. He said the win ended a wait of nearly 70 years and marked a turning point for cricket in the Union Territory. “This victory has come after decades of effort and patience. It shows the determination and talent of the players,” PM Modi said. The Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic

cricket tournament, has long been dominated by teams like Mumbai, Karnataka, and Delhi. Jammu and Kashmir had often been seen as underdogs, with limited infrastructure, harsh weather conditions, and fewer opportunities compared to other states. Despite these challenges, the team steadily improved over the years, producing disciplined performances and nurturing local talent. This season proved different. Jammu and Kashmir showed consistency from the group stage itself. Their bowlers played a key role, while the batting unit delivered under pressure in crucial matches. The final against Karnataka was a test of temperament, and the team responded with calm and control to seal the title. A major highlight of the campaign was young pacer Auqib Nabi, who finished the season with 60 wickets. His

sharp spells and match-winning performances drew attention across the country. Modi also mentioned his contribution, saying his performance is now being widely discussed. The victory has triggered celebrations across Jammu and Kashmir. From Srinagar to Jammu, people welcomed the team’s success, seeing it as more than just a sporting win. For many, it reflects a shift in the region’s sporting culture and growing confidence among youth. The Prime Minister also linked the achievement to wider developments in sports in Jammu and Kashmir. He pointed to the successful hosting of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026, held in Ladakh and Gulmarg, which saw participation from athletes across the country. He said such events are helping build a strong sports ecosystem in the UT.
