WHAT: Sodium is a mineral that is essential for the human body. It is present in all foods naturally. Salt contains 40% sodium.

FUNCTIONS: Sodium is essential for maintaining homeostasis or a balance of water and minerals in our body. It is needed for muscular contraction and nerve functioning. Excessive intake may lead to high blood pressure over a period of time.

SOURCES: Table and cooking salt, Potassium salts, Rock salt, all vegetables, fruits, dals, cereals, animal food.

HIGH SAT FOODS: Breads, namkeens, bakery products, pickles, chutney. Processed foods may use sodium salts as preservatives increasing the content.
