Chandigarh, May 23: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Congress over fresh revelations in the National Herald case, calling it a “historic example of how a political party looted its own legacy”.
Chugh in a statement said the case is not just about financial irregularities, but about how the Congress turned a newspaper founded during the freedom struggle into a private asset for the Nehru-Gandhi family. “The recent ED report has marked Rs 142 crore as ‘proceeds of crime.’ The question is — who used this money and for what purpose?” he asked.
The BJP leader pointed out the strange transaction where a company owning thousands of crores worth of property was ‘sold’ for just Rs 90 crore. “Shockingly, both the buyer and seller belonged to the same political ecosystem,” he said. “This is not corruption between two parties — this is corruption within the same party.”
Chugh also questioned the Congress’s narrative of calling the National Herald a symbol of the freedom movement. “If it was truly a legacy project of the Congress, why didn’t the lakhs of Congress workers come forward to save it? Why was it allowed to collapse only to be quietly taken over through dubious deals?” he asked.
He added, “Today’s Congress, driven by greed and dynastic control, has nothing in common with the party that once chanted ‘Ek chhavanni chandi ki, jai bolo Mahatma Gandhi ki’. This isn’t just a financial scam. It’s a deep reflection of how the Congress has fallen — ethically, morally, and ideologically.”
