Kulgam, Dec 28: A two-year-old girl lost her life, while three members of her family are in stable condition at District Hospital Kulgam after suffering from suffocation caused by charcoal fumes, officials said.
The family, originally from Ramban district, had been residing in a rented accommodation at Ves Batpora, Kulgam. Amid heavy snowfall, they were rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious.
Shahnawaz Ahmad, a resident of Ves Batpora, said the family had burned charcoal in a tin to keep warm during the freezing temperatures. The charcoal’s gas emissions led to the family losing consciousness overnight.
“When we realized what had happened, we immediately informed the authorities,” he said.
Bilal Ahmad, Tehsildar Kulgam, said that a call to the tehsil administration’s helpline reported the incident. “An ambulance from the local PHC, along with doctors, was dispatched immediately. Upon arrival, we found the family unconscious and rushed them to the hospital,” he said.
He added that one of the children, identified as Aadiya Jan, daughter of Nisar Ahmad Khatana, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. “The other three family members were rescued and are currently stable,” he said.
The deceased child was laid to rest in Ves Batpora with the assistance of local villagers, who helped the family with the last rites.
Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Kulgam confirmed that the child was brought dead and the remaining family members are in stable condition.
