Srinagar, Dec 08: Spanning over thousands of kanals of land from Takenwari Srinagar to Sangan, Shallabugh wetland in Ganderbal district is preparing to host migratory birds. The vital ecological site is a haven for biodiversity, particularly during the winter months.
Migratory birds from regions like Siberia, China, and Japan have started arriving at Shallabugh as temperatures plummet in their native habitats. Their journey, which begins in October, is a testament to their extraordinary natural skill in “aviation,” enabling them to maintain precise balance in flight. These birds stay in the valley until late March, contributing significantly to the region’s ecosystem.
To safeguard these avian visitors, the Department of Wildlife Protection has implemented strict measures. On November 27, the department issued an advisory detailing the steps being taken to protect migratory birds and their habitats.
As per order, no individual is allowed to enter the wetlands without prior permission. Birdwatchers must obtain proper authorization. Control rooms have been activated to curb poaching and ensure the safety of the birds. The department has appealed to media outlets to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these birds.
The advisory warns that any unauthorized access to the wetlands will be treated as a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, with strict penalties for offenders.
