Qazigund, Nov 22: A massive fire erupted in two adjacent scrap yards in Vessu, Qazigund on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in significant damage to the unit.
Local witnesses said that nearby people, along with Fire & Emergency Services and the police worked diligently to extinguish the blaze. However, the intensity of the fire caused substantial damage amounting to lakhs for the owner.
An official said that the scrap yards situated on Mondhol Road in Vessu owned by Abdul Hamid Malik from Sudora, and Manzoor Ahmad Dar of Turkoo Tanchloo, Kulgam caught fire in the afternoon. He said immediate efforts were made to mitigate the damage.
Gull Mohammad, a relative of the owner, said that the fire rapidly engulfed the scrap unit, devastating around Rs 30-40 lakh worth of plastic scraps, reducing them to ashes.
“There were no injuries to anyone in the incident. However, the extent of damage to the scraps was massive. We express gratitude to the J&K police and the Fire & Emergency Services for their efforts. Despite the fire being intense and mainly involving plastic scraps, their assistance was invaluable,” Gull said.
A police official said that they are investigating the case.
