Lehi, April 02: The Government of India has announced a series of ambitious solar and renewable energy projects in Ladakh, positioning the region as a major hub for clean energy.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, provided details in the Lok Sabha, highlighting key infrastructure developments, environmental safeguards and socio-economic benefits for local communities. “A 25 MWac/50 MWdc grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) project with a 40 MWh battery storage system is already underway in Taru, Leh, implemented by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). Awarded to M/s Prozeal Green Energy Private Limited under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, the project is expected to enhance energy security in the region,” the MoS said.
He said that in a more ambitious move, the government has proposed a 13 GW Hybrid Renewable Energy Park spanning Pang, Debring, and Kharnak. “This massive project, integrating solar, wind, and battery storage, is in the initial planning phase, with execution partners yet to be finalised,” the MoS said, adding that “to ensure efficient power transmission, the government is implementing the Inter-State Transmission System under GEC-II, a project estimated at Rs 20,773.70 crore, with the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited overseeing its execution. The central government is providing 40 percent financial assistance for this initiative.”
He further said that alongside solar energy, Ladakh will see the development of small hydro projects that include-Zunkul Small Hydro Power Project (2.5 MW) and Bogdang Small Hydro Power Project (0.80 MW). “These initiatives are designed to provide additional energy security while complementing Ladakh’s renewable energy roadmap,” the MoS said.
He said that the government has assured that all projects comply with sustainability regulations. While solar PV projects do not require environmental clearance under the EIA Notification 2006, the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, in effect since April 1, 2023, mandate responsible disposal and recycling of solar modules to minimise environmental impact.
The GoI emphasised that these projects will bring significant socio-economic benefits, including—job creation in construction, maintenance, and energy management, growth of local businesses and small enterprises, improved infrastructure, including roads and transport networks and more reliable electricity supply for residents and industries.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, SECI has also introduced programmes for digital education, teacher training, environmental sustainability, and medical facility upgrades. With these strategic investments, Ladakh is on track to become a key driver of India’s clean energy ambitions, combining economic growth with environmental conservation.
