Srinagar, July 19: In an unprecedented weather event, Katra in Jammu division witnessed heavy downpour, with rainfall reaching a staggering 315.4mm in just 24 hours. This deluge marks the highest rainfall in the past 43 years, surpassing the previous record of 292.4mm recorded on July 31, 2019, according to officials.
The torrential rains have prompted authorities to take precautionary measures, with the Doda and Ramban administrations ordering the closure of all schools due to the inclement weather.
The Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Sonam Lotus, issued warnings of the increased risk of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides in many areas. He urged the public to exercise caution and avoid streams, rivers, and vulnerable spots.
As a safety measure, all government and private schools in Doda and Ramban districts have been closed to ensure the well-being of students. Chief Education Officer Ramban emphasized the importance of assisting students in reaching their homes safely.
Meanwhile, a landslide struck near Magray Mohalla (Kota Top) in Kharangal Panchayat of Bhalessa, putting residents on high alert. Fortunately, the houses in the area were located at a safe distance, sparing structures and lives from any damage.
In light of the ongoing heavy rainfall, Chief Education Officer Ramban has issued an advisory to close all government and private schools in the district for classes 1 to 10 on July 20 and 21, respectively. However, staff members are required to continue attending their schools during this period.
Authorities have urged the public to stay informed about road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel. The Deputy Commissioner of Doda, Vishesh Mahajan, reassured citizens that the administration is ready to provide support through the Control Room and Police Control Room helplines.
