Pulwama, Feb 06 : The Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee ( JKPCC) has directed Deputy Commissioner Pulwama for immediate closure of mining activity at two places in Romeshi and Rambiara rivulets for non compliance of environmental clearance.
Through two separate orders JKPCC has directed the project proponents M/S Khursheed Ahmad at C- Lassipora, SIDCO bridge downstream Rambiara, and M/S Umesh Kumar Sharma at 36/B, Rahmoo bridge downstream Romeshi, for immediate cessation of the mining activity.
Through the orders the DC Pulwama has been directed to get the mining activity ceased immediately. The JKPCC in its orders said that contractors had violated the rules of the environmental clearance by using heavy machinery including JCBs and L&T Cranes for mining activities in their allotted blocks.
The development came after the intervention of National Green Tribunal ( NGT) which was approached by noted social activist Dr Raja Muzaffar through a petition.
Dr Raja Muzaffar, welcomed the latest directives. He, however, said that the directions were delayed and JKPCC was unmoved for the last two years during which minerals in huge quantities were mined from these streams in violation of environmental clearance norms.
The petitioner said he was forced to knock on the doors of NGT after inaction from concerned authorities. He demanded authorities to make JKPCC accountable for damages done to the water bodies.
