Srinagar, Jan 29: In a strategic move to boost anti-terrorism and rescue operations in UT, the Jammu and Kashmir Police is all set to procure advanced wall radars. Proposals for the acquisition have been accepted by the Home Ministry, under its modernization plan of the police force, officials said.
A police official at Police Headquarters told Rising Kashmir that as part of the modernization initiative, the ministry has given a green signal for the procurement of four wall radars for the department.
Explaining the technical aspects of the procurement, the police officer said that the wall radars are being acquired through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal.
“The specifications for these radar systems have already been initiated by the department, with a focus on features such as compactness, portability, and a handheld video terminal. The radar system is designed to be operated by a single person and is expected to have a maximum weight of 4 kgs, including batteries,” he said.
As per the proposal, the range of wall radar includes Brick, Cement, Stone Wall (up to 12″) -20 m, Brick, Cement, Stone Wall (up to 18″) – 13m, and concrete and reinforced Concrete Wall (18″)-8m.
He said that the modernization plan also includes training personnel to effectively operate and utilize these sophisticated radars. This initiative is expected to elevate the skill set of the police force, enabling them to harness the full potential of the acquired technology.
The Police Officer said that the implementation of advanced wall radars can be used to fight against terrorism and in responding to natural disasters or other emergencies. The real-time data provided by these radars will be used to make decisions swiftly, he added.
In response to this development, former police chief SP Vaid lauded the decision, highlighting the importance of utilizing the latest technologies in law enforcement and operations.
“Under the police modernization grant, each year, the police force is embracing the latest technologies, and these advancements prove to be highly beneficial in ground operations,” he added.
Earlier, the Police also moved a proposal to procure state-of-the-art Mini Remotely Operated Vehicle (mROVs) designed for anti-terrorism operations including Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and surveillance operations in the region.
In October last year, the J&K government constituted a 6-member Union Territory level Empowered Committee headed by Financial Commissioner (ACS) Home for “deliberating upon modernization plan of Jammu and Kashmir Police under the scheme Assistance to States or UTs and approving it for submission to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Government of India.
This move was aimed at strengthening police infrastructure by equipping the police with the required mobility, modern technology, weaponry, communication equipment, etc.
