Srinagar, Dec 27: The Income Tax Department, Srinagar conducted an interactive program “TAX TALKS” at Ibn Khaldun Auditorium in collaboration with the University of Kashmir. The event was aimed at raising tax consciousness and focused on the topic “Fighting against black money is a fight for socio-economic justice”.
The program featured Shakil Ahmad Ganie, IRS (Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Srinagar), and Shakil Maqbool, ICAS (Additional Commissioner, State Taxes, J&K), among other officers and officials from the department. Approximately 150 students from various disciplines attended the event, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Professor Nilofer Khan.
The purpose of the session was to engage academia with tax administration, emphasizing the importance of taxes in national development. Professor Imtiyaz ul Haq welcomed the officers, and Professor Nazir Ahmad Nazir provided introductory remarks on the impact of Black Money.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude for organizing the interactive session and urged the department to conduct more such programs to create tax awareness among students. Karamvir, an Income Tax Officer, briefed the audience on the department’s organizational structure and functioning.
Students from different academic branches participated in an interactive debate on the menace of Black Money and its impact on socio-economic health. Shakil Ahmad Ganai discussed the importance of direct taxes in the nation’s progress, addressing the effects of black money and the role of citizens in curbing it.
He emphasized the measures taken by the government and legislative frameworks in place to combat this issue. Shakil Maqbool highlighted the significance of indirect taxation and the behavioural aspect of taxation to raise tax consciousness.
Certificates and prizes were distributed to participants, and the event concluded with thanks extended to the officers from the Income Tax Department for their valuable insights. The organizing committee was also acknowledged for its efforts in making the event successful.
