Drass, Dec 18: In the biting cold of -10 to -15 degrees Celsius, the Himalayan players from Drass in the Union Territory of Ladakh are rigorously preparing for the much-anticipated Ice Hockey Championship, set to begin next week at the natural ice rink in Bhimbat. Despite the harsh winter conditions, the youth are transforming the challenges of freezing temperatures into an opportunity to hone their skills.
Ice hockey, a beloved sport in Ladakh, thrives on the region’s natural ice rinks formed during the winter months. Areas like Kargil and Leh, along with Drass – often referred to as the second coldest inhabited place in the world – provide ideal conditions for the sport. These natural turfs have even produced international players, placing Ladakh on the global ice hockey map.
To further promote winter sports in Drass, the district administration has been organizing annual ice hockey tournaments, drawing dozens of teams from the region. This year’s preparations are in full swing, with local youngsters working tirelessly to ensure the rink is ready for the upcoming event.
One of the players shared how the extreme cold poses challenges for daily life but also provides the perfect setting for winter sports. “Drass is one of the few places in India where natural ice rinks form every winter. While others face difficulties in this cold, we see it as a chance to pursue our passion for ice hockey and skating,” he said.
The rink at Bhimbat comes alive with a festive atmosphere every winter, particularly in January, as the natural ice becomes ideal for skating and hockey. These activities offer young players a platform to showcase their talent and potentially advance to professional levels.
Chairman of the Himalayan Sports and Cultural Development Organization, Mohd Amin Polo, praised the ongoing preparations. “The ice skating event is expected to kick off next week, and the ice turf is almost ready. Besides hockey, other winter sports are also underway,” he said.\
Polo also acknowledged the support of the Indian Army in ensuring the success of these games, alongside efforts by the district administration. He emphasized that these events not only boost local talent but also promote winter tourism in the region.
