Pulwama, June 10 : In response to a forecasted heatwave over parts of the Kashmir division from June 9th to 12th, the Agrometeorological Field Unit (AMFU), Srinagar, has issued an agro-advisory to help farmers mitigate the impact of high temperatures on agriculture and livestock.
According to the advisory, isolated places in the region are expected to experience heatwave conditions. Farmers and livestock owners have been urged to take immediate precautionary measures to protect their orchards, crops, and animals.
Farmers with fruit orchards are advised to apply light irrigation in the early morning or late evening to maintain adequate soil moisture levels. They should avoid heavy pruning or pesticide spraying during the heatwave period to prevent stress on plants. Orchard basins should be kept weed-free and covered with mulch to conserve moisture and reduce evaporation.
For agricultural crops, it is recommended to irrigate during cooler hours of the day to minimize water loss. The use of mulching materials such as straw, dry grass, or plastic in nurseries and open fields will help retain soil moisture. Farmers are also advised to delay the sowing or transplanting of Kharif crops if adequate irrigation is not available during the peak heat period.
Livestock and poultry owners should ensure round-the-clock access to clean and cool drinking water. Animal shelters should be equipped with proper shade, ventilation, and cooling systems such as fans or sprinklers. Transporting animals during the daytime should be avoided, and diets should include more green fodder to help maintain hydration. Farmers are encouraged to stay in contact with local animal health centres for any assistance.
