Kulgam, Dec 31: A one-day entrepreneurship skill development program on feeding, breeding, and health management of sheep and goats was organized by SKUAST-K at KVK Kulgam. The program aimed to enhance awareness among breeders regarding effective management practices for their livestock.
Imtiyaz Ahmad, a participating sheep breeder, said that the event was highly beneficial, particularly for understanding animal health management. He said that the focus was on feeding practices, healthcare, and other critical aspects of livestock management.
“The program educated us on proper feeding techniques and cost-effective solutions like balanced feed, which can significantly improve the health of sheep and goats,” he said.
The participants also discussed issues such as deworming, vaccination, breeding, and general animal care with experts. Imtiyaz added that regular awareness programs are essential, as there is limited knowledge about such topics among local breeders.
Dr. Pervaiz Ahmad, Senior Scientist (Animal Nutrition), SKUAST-K, said that there is growing interest in sheep farming as a viable livelihood option, particularly in Kulgam.
“Educated individuals are increasingly turning to sheep farming. However, many lack awareness about selecting suitable breeds, constructing proper sheds, and implementing effective feeding and health management practices,” he said.
The senior scientist stated that the program’s focus was on disease management, vaccination, deworming, and marketing strategies. He said the experts addressed issues faced by breeders, particularly during the winter months, when feeding and health management become challenging.
The program also included interactive sessions with veterinary scientists from SKUAST-K and officers from the Sheep Husbandry Department. Experts present included Dr. Zahoor Ahmed Wani (Veterinary Parasitology), Dr. Muzamil Abdullah (Livestock Production Management), Dr. Shahid (Animal Breeding), and Dr. Adil Ahmed Dar (Sheep Development Officer, Kulgam), with the session chaired by Professor Manzoor Ganai.
