Srinagar, Mar 10: Gusty winds accompanied by rainfall wreaked havoc in northern Kashmir on Friday, damaging over 14 residential rooftops. The meteorological department has forecasted further rains, thunder, and lightning in the region towards late Saturday afternoon.
As predicted by the MeT department, gusty winds ranging from 35 to 45 kmph caused substantial damage in central and north Kashmir districts, including Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, and Bandipora. The winds uprooted trees and blocked highways at multiple locations in Baramulla, though fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The gusty winds caused substantial damage to rooftops, rooted out trees and blocked highways at multiple locations in Baramulla. However, there was no report of any injuries.
Many areas in Baramulla and Budgam district witnessed huge damage to rooftops of residential houses in Tilgam, Pattan, Wagoora and Kreeri areas. Similarly, in Baramulla, the winds damaged several residential rooftops.
An official told Rising Kashmir that gusty winds caused damage to property including the residential houses in several parts of north Kashmir.
He said that there was however, no causality or injury reported anywhere, while details are being collected from various places.
“Traffic movement on Srinagar-Baramulla highway was also halted near Hanjiwara, Tapper area of Pattan after trees were uprooted on the road due to windstorm.
Meanwhile SHO Pattan Khalid Fayaz along with his team reached on spot and restored traffic.
An official said that a tree fell over a Tavera vehicle bearing registration number JK01X- 8919 in the inner premises of Tatoo Ground area of Batamaloo Srinagar
He said that no one was in the vehicle at the time of incident however, no loss of life or injury is said to be reported. Meanwhile, Police have taken the Cognizance of the incident
He said police along with his team visited the areas to assess the situation and the damage caused to residential houses due to gusty winds. Based on preliminary assessment, around 14 residential houses suffered minor or partial damage to rooftops in Baramulla. We have drafted a list, and if the cases fall within the ambit of SDRF, support will be provided, the official said.
Similarly, gusty winds damaged electricity in Baramulla causing disruption to electricity in the area. “Restoration efforts are currently underway in Pattan and adjoining areas,” officials said.
Meanwhile light rain, thundershowers, and gusty winds occur over many places in Jammu division including Poonch, Rajouri, and Banihal in Jammu division on Friday.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr.Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that gusty winds also were reported in parts of Kashmir and Jammu division on Saturday.
“Till late Friday , there were reports of gusty winds in Srinagar, Ganderbal, Baramulla. The intense showers accompanied by gusty winds, thunderstorm, lightning/Hailstorm also occurred over Jammu, Reasi, Poonch, Rajouri,” he said.
Director MeT said that the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy on Saturday with possibility of rainfall along with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds, hailstorm, and lightning at a few places in Kashmir valley during the weekend.
On May 13, the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with light rain at a few places, while from May 14-18, the weather will generally remain dry, he said.
Srinagarexperienced the season’s hottest day at 30.8 degree Celsius on Thursday and it was 7.2 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the season.
Night temperature also witnessed a rise and recorded 1-3 degree Celsius above normal at most weather stations of Kashmir valley during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
