Srinagar, Feb 23: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Sunday that Gulmarg is poised to become a major destination for heli-skiing and year-round tourism, citing the growing interest in adventure sports and sightseeing.
Speaking to reporters in Gulmarg, Abdullah highlighted the increasing popularity of heli-skiing, which offers enthusiasts the chance to explore pristine, untouched slopes that are inaccessible by lifts. “Heli-skiing is attracting skiers who seek unique experiences, and we are excited to offer them new opportunities to explore the region,” he said.
While snowfall this season has been lower than anticipated, Abdullah expressed optimism, noting that skiers are still enjoying the experience. He confirmed that heli-skiing operations would commence from today. “Despite the weather challenges, skiers are finding the slopes to their satisfaction,” he added.
Abdullah further revealed that helicopter services will now operate year-round, catering not only to skiers but also to tourists seeking scenic aerial views of the region. “Gulmarg will no longer just be known for its gondola rides but will also gain fame for heli-skiing and helicopter safaris,” he stated.
On the upcoming Khelo India Winter Games, Abdullah said that experts from the Ski Federation would inspect the slopes after February 26 to assess conditions. If the snow holds, the event could take place in the first week of March. “We are hopeful that snowfall will continue, allowing us to proceed with the games,” he said.
The Chief Minister also shared that discussions are ongoing with private investors to enhance the ski infrastructure in Gulmarg. “We are open to any beneficial proposal and will move forward with those that offer long-term growth for the region,” he added.
In response to a query about preparations for Ramadhan, Abdullah stated that he would personally oversee a review meeting soon. The meeting would focus on ensuring essential services such as roads, water supply, rations, electricity, traffic, and Waqf Board matters are in place for the holy month.
With these developments, Gulmarg’s tourism landscape is set for a significant transformation, with both adventure tourism and spiritual preparations in focus.
