Srinagar, July 26:
In a historic decision, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has formally granted permission for the Muharram 8 procession to be held in Srinagar, ending a three-decade-long hiatus.
The traditional procession route of ShaheedGunj to Dalgate, which had been off-limits due to prevailing law and order situations since 1989, will now witness the religious observance.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, announced the approval, allowing the procession to take place for a duration of two hours, from 6 am to 8 am, along the historic route. The decision was made after careful consideration of the current situation in the region.
The permission was granted following an application from the Yaadgar-i Hussaini Committee, seeking approval for the Muharram procession on 8th Muharram—1445, from Guru Bazar to Dalgate via BudshahKadal and M.A Road, Srinagar.
The Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, conveyed that there were no objections to the procession by the committee.
To ensure a smooth and secure event without compromising national security, communal harmony, and public order, certain conditions have been laid out by the authorities. The organizers have been strictly instructed not to engage in any anti-national or anti-establishment activities, deliver provocative speeches, or display flags or symbols of banned organizations. Defacement or damage to public property will not be tolerated.
“To guarantee the safety and security of the participants and the general public, the organizers are required to cooperate with local police and security agencies and must not cause any obstructions to traffic flow during the procession. The usage of drones during the event is strictly prohibited without proper permission,” stated the order issued by the District Magistrate, Srinagar.
The permission has been granted in favor of the Yaadgar-i Hussaini Committee, KalooManzilMohalla Guru Bazar, and the time window of 6:00 am to 8:00 am on July 27, 2023 has been finalized, considering the larger public interest. The procession’s route covers various commercial establishments, educational institutions, and vital services such as ambulances and offices, making the timing crucial for minimal disruptions.
This decision by the government reflects a significant step towards promoting communal harmony and religious freedom while ensuring public safety and order in the region. Authorities will remain vigilant in upholding the stipulated conditions to maintain peace and tranquility during this important religious observance.
