Udhampur (Majalta), May 15: The Minister for Education, Social Welfare, Health and Medical Education, Sakeena Itoo, today inaugurated the newly constructed building of Government Degree College (GDC) Majalta in Udhampur district, calling it a significant step toward strengthening higher education infrastructure in remote areas.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by MLA Udhampur East Ranbir Singh Pathania, Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Ram Niwas Sharma, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur Minga Sherpa, senior education officials, faculty members, students, and local residents.
In her address, Sakeena Itoo said the government remains committed to expanding access to quality education, particularly for students in far-flung and rural areas.
She said improved infrastructure such as the new college building would help create a more conducive academic environment and enhance learning outcomes.
A key focus of her speech was the growing concern over substance abuse. She urged educational institutions to take a proactive role in promoting awareness and building a “drug-free society.”
She emphasized that youth must be guided toward constructive activities, supported through counselling, awareness campaigns, sports, and community engagement.
“The youth are the backbone of the nation and must be protected from harmful addictions that damage individuals, families, and society,” she said, calling for collective responsibility in addressing drug abuse.
MLA Ranbir Singh Pathania praised the efforts behind the development of the college infrastructure and reiterated his commitment to improving educational facilities in the constituency.
Commissioner Secretary Higher Education Ram Niwas Sharma highlighted the importance of strengthening rural institutions through quality teaching and improved infrastructure.
Principal Dr. Shalini Sharma presented a report on the college’s academic progress and development journey, expressing gratitude to the government for its continued support.
She said the new campus would significantly benefit students from remote areas by providing a modern learning environment.
As part of the programme, Sakeena Itoo also planted a sapling on the campus, highlighting environmental conservation, and released the college newsletter.
Students presented cultural performances and a nukkad natak themed on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, reinforcing the message against drug abuse.
