Understanding complex concepts in native language enhances learning, application: KU VC
5-day workshop highlights significance of science, engineering in regional languages

 

Srinagar, May 27: To highlight the significance of understanding science and engineering in regional languages and the relevance of glossary, the Department of Electronics and Instrumentation Technology (DEIT), University of Kashmir (KU) in collaboration with the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education), New Delhi, organised a five-day workshop here.
Titled, ‘Fundamental Glossary of Broadcasting (English-Hindi-Kashmiri)’, the workshop ran through May 24 and sought to underline the critical role of glossaries in broadcasting and other scientific disciplines, an official statement issued here read.
An expert advisory committee, comprising both subject and language specialists, meticulously discussed and finalised the first glossary during the 5 days during which 2900 broadcasting terms were translated into the Kashmiri language, the statement read.
“New terms were innovatively coined with the assistance of renowned linguists from the university, adhering to all CSTT parameters and standards,” a spokesperson said, adding that the experts from the relevant fields emphasised the need to have similar workshops in other science and social science subjects.
KU Vice Chancellor, Prof Nilofer Khan, commended the efforts of all the stakeholders for organising such nationally significant workshops at the varsity.
“Understanding complex scientific and technical concepts in one’s native language can greatly enhance learning and application,” she added.
Workshop Officer-in-Charge, Er J S Rawat from the Ministry of Education, and Workshop Coordinator and Sr Assistant Professor at DEIT, Dr Javaid Ahmad Sheikh, met with KU functionaries to discuss the mandate of the glossary projects.
“This workshop exemplifies the synergy between educational policy and practical application, paving the way for similar initiatives in other science and social science subjects.” Er J S Rawat said.
At the valedictory function, held in the Conference Hall of the Department of English, KU Registrar, Prof Naseer Iqbal, highlighted the importance of understanding science and engineering in regional languages and the relevance of such initiatives in the context of NEP-2020.
“Organising such nationally significant workshops at our varsity validates our commitment to advancing education in regional languages,” he reiterated.
Assuring all possible support from the university for future projects, he commended the experts for their diligent work while expressing gratitude to CSTT Chairman, Prof Girish Jha, for approving these crucial projects.
Head, Department of Electronics and IT, Prof M Tariq Banday, also spoke on the occasion.
Dr Javaid Ahmad Sheikh conducted the proceedings and also proposed the formal vote of thanks.
