Srinagar, Jan 02: The fresh snowfall on Thursday morning caused disruptions in North Kashmir, blocking roads and affecting daily life.
As predicted by the Meteorology Department, the valley experienced heavy snowfall, particularly in the higher reaches.
Roads across various locations were blocked early in the morning, but by afternoon, the administration had successfully cleared the snow, restoring access to most areas.
Despite the disruptions, there were no major damages to the electricity supply. Officials from the Power Development Department (PDD) informed Rising Kashmir that while some areas faced minor issues, their teams were well-prepared for the snowfall. “We had already geared up for this anticipated weather and restored electricity in most parts of North Kashmir. Teams are still working to restore power in the higher reaches,” said a PDD official.
Similarly, the Public Works Department (PWD) responded quickly, ensuring that roads were cleared of snow. “Our men and machinery were on high alert. We made sure to prioritize the clearing of roads leading to hospitals and key areas,” a PWD official said.
While the snowfall caused temporary challenges, local farmers have expressed optimism, highlighting the potential benefits for agriculture and horticulture. “This snow is a blessing for our crops. It will help irrigate the fields and ensure a better harvest in summer,” said Ghulam Hassan, a farmer from Baramulla.
Another farmer, Mohammad Rafiq from Kupwara, shared a similar sentiment “Snowfall at this time of the year is crucial for our apple orchards. It ensures that the trees get the necessary cold that helps in the blossoming process.”
