Srinagar, Oct 09: The five-day workshop titled “Engaging Students for Wetland Conservation – Khushalsar & Gilsar Lakes” concluded on Wednesday at Islamia College of Science and Commerce with a strong message highlighting the need for student involvement in wetland restoration efforts.
The event, which took place both on-campus and in the surrounding wetlands, saw active participation from students, environmentalists, and conservation experts. The workshop was designed to engage students as key stakeholders in the restoration of the Khushalsar and Gilsar lakes, two of Kashmir’s vital wetlands.
Prof. (Dr.) Tehmina Yousuf, Principal of the College, lauded the Department of Zoology for its ongoing focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. She assured that the workshop’s momentum would continue, and emphasized the role of students as future leaders in conservation efforts. “The energy and enthusiasm witnessed during this workshop are encouraging. We are committed to taking these efforts forward,” she said.
The valedictory session featured notable speakers, including Mr. Rafi Ahmad Baht, Regional Director of the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing (DEERS). He emphasized the crucial role students play in environmental conservation and the importance of fostering a deeper understanding of wetland ecosystems among youth.
Twenty-two students from various streams participated in the workshop, with each being awarded certificates for their dedication to the cause. A photo-essay exhibition, showcasing students’ creative and informative work, was held in the Zoology Lawns. The exhibition aimed to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by the Khushalsar and Gilsar Lakes.
Technical sessions were conducted by distinguished trainers, including Mr. Kh Samuel Poumai, Senior Manager at STS Global, and Mr. Jalal Ud Din Baba, a Science Filmmaker and Earth Journalist. Their sessions offered insights into sustainable practices for wetland conservation and the role of media in environmental advocacy.
Prominent environmentalists such as Advocate Nadeem Qadri, Ms. Nazir Benazir, and Mr. Mansoor Wangnoo attended the function, commending the students for their engagement and stressing the importance of collective efforts to protect Kashmir’s natural resources.
The workshop successfully created a platform for student involvement in wetland conservation, equipping them with knowledge and fostering a sense of responsibility towards protecting these fragile ecosystems.
