Srinagar, Aug 13: Paras Health Srinagar successfully performed the first colonic coaxial stenting procedure in the Kashmir Valley, saving the life of a middle-aged female cancer patient. The patient, who had been battling colon cancer for two years, arrived at the hospital in acute distress, unable to eat for a week due to a bowel obstruction.
The patient had previously undergone colonic resection and chemotherapy in Delhi and Mumbai, but the disease had recurred, leading to a blockage of an existing stent in her large intestine. The medical team at Paras Health Srinagar, led by Dr. Wahid Akbar, Consultant Gastroenterology, opted for an advanced endoscopic technique—colonic coaxial stenting—rather than a third surgical intervention, which could have resulted in a permanent colostomy.
The procedure involved placing a metallic stent, known as a SEMS, through the tumor site to relieve the blockage. The patient responded well, beginning to eat 12 hours after the procedure and was discharged in good health 36 hours later.
This groundbreaking procedure marks a significant achievement in cancer treatment in the region, highlighting the expertise and advanced medical capabilities available at Paras Health Srinagar.
