Stressing on the importance of voter participation in the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Ahmad Ganaie, former member of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and an independent candidate from Beerwah constituency in an exclusive interview with Rising Kashmir Correspondent Arif Rashid stated that the electorate has the opportunity to select representatives who can effectively address the issues faced by the people.
Q: Previously you were affiliated with JeI. What made you contest polls?
A: My association with JEI concluded in 2019; that is a chapter of my past. I aspire to contribute positively to the welfare of the people throughout my life; I have engaged in social work, and I remain committed to serving the community. I have acceptance of people; they will continue to support me. That is the reason I am going to contest the Assembly elections as an independent candidate.
This year, the parliamentary elections were conducted exceptionally well. The electorate expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the Election Commission of India managed the elections, thereby restoring faith in the electoral process. Former members of JEI have also expressed their approval of this approach, particularly as Er Rashid achieved success in North Kashmir in the Parliamentary elections. I firmly believe that the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted fairly, allowing the public to cast their votes and select representatives who will genuinely work for the welfare of the people.
Q: Why have you chosen to contest polls from Beerwah instead of Budgam constituency?
A: Previously, I was part of the Beerwah constituency; however, following the delimitation process, my area has now been included in the Budgam constituency. I have dedicated 18 years to social work in the Beerwah constituency, which has provided me with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the people in the Beerwah constituency. My strong connections with the community motivated me to contest this election from Beerwah.
Q: Sarjan Barkati is also contesting elections from Beerwah, your thoughts?
A: This is a commendable initiative, and I wholeheartedly support it. Contesting elections is a fundamental democratic right, and it represents one of the most effective means to address our concerns. I have confidence in our democratic system, which empowers our selected representatives to tackle public issues, regardless of whether it involves Sarjan Barkati or any other individual. Anyone committed to the welfare of the community should actively engage in the electoral process, as we have trust and hope in our democracy.
Q: If you win polls, what would be your priorities?
A: My primary objective is to promote the welfare of the people, ensuring that the concerns of the general public remain my foremost priority. I aspire for every individual to have access to education, enabling our youth to illuminate their futures and contribute positively to society. Additionally, I aim to focus on the upliftment of the community, where the issues and demands of the public will be prioritised.
