Srinagar, Sept 30: In a heartwarming gesture aimed at giving back to Mother Nature, the North Kashmir Charitable Trust, under the leadership of Dr. Mudasira, has embarked on an initiative to rid Handwara of polythene.
Over the seven months, Dr. Mudasira’s team has successfully collected a staggering 500 quintals of polythene and 3000 quintals of plastic in the Handwara sub-division.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Dr. Mudasira expressed her satisfaction with the progress of the campaign. She revealed that this environmental crusade was launched in March of the current year and has since achieved resounding success. What initially began with a limited number of people collecting polythene from the vicinity of their hospital has now grown into an army of 65 individuals.
Dr Mudasira explained that the team’s initial efforts to visit households in Handwara met with little success, as polythene was perceived to hold little value. However, the team quickly adapted and began collecting discarded polythene from roads and public areas. Their efforts now extend beyond Handwara to cover its adjoining areas.
Remarkably, the campaign has not only contributed to environmental preservation but has also empowered the local people.
Dr Mudasira shared that initially, she had to hire many labourers, but now, many have become self-sufficient by making a livelihood from collecting polythene. Polythene is sold to recyclers at a rate of 10-15 rupees per Kilogram, while plastic fetches 15-20 rupees per Kg. This recycling initiative has led to a significant increase in collection.
Dr. Mudasira expressed optimism about expanding their reach, with plans to cover the entire district in the near future. She urged the common people to join their cause in preserving Mother Earth, emphasizing that her team would gladly collect polythene to ensure a cleaner environment for all.
