Anantnag, Oct 23: Doctors and students at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag received training in basic and advanced life support aimed at enhancing their emergency response skills. In this two day workshop focused on equipping participants with life-saving techniques, including resuscitation.
The programme, held at the GMC Anantnag campus in Dialgam, saw active participation from both doctors and PG students. The training sessions covered Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS), providing essential knowledge and skills for handling critical medical emergencies.
Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb, Principal of GMC Anantnag, told reporters that this workshop has been organized by Pediatrics Department of Government Medical College, Anantnag in collaboration with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics. She further said that the workshop aimed to teach basic and advanced life support to doctors and students.
“We had six trainers from outside GMC Anantnag, including experts from the Director of Health, who taught our doctors and students basic life support. After mastering basic life support, we have moved on to advanced life support. This is a significant achievement for our medical college, as it’s the first time such a joint venture has taken place in any medical college in Kashmir,” she said.
Prof. Najeeb said that professors from renowned institutions like Lady Hardinge Medical College, PGI Chandigarh, Government Medical College Chandigarh, Maulana Azad Medical College, and Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi and Sagar medical college MP participated in the training.
“This training is crucial because the more we learn about basic and advanced life support, the better equipped we are to train others. Advanced life support enables us to teach life-saving techniques, such as resuscitation. If we save one life, we have saved the universe. After this, we plan to train police officers, administrative personnel, and traffic police in basic life support. By learning these skills ourselves, we can pass them on and save valuable lives,” she added.
Dr. Showkat Hussain Tali, Associate Professor and Head of the Pediatrics Department at GMC Anantnag, and the course coordinator of IAP- ALS training course said that there was a time when people would only rely on prayers when a child was critically ill, but now doctors can intervene and save lives with the blessings of GOD.
He said that national trainers have come to teach them how to provide appropriate care to critically sick patients.
Dr. Tali further said that this was the first workshop of its kind held in any medical college in Kashmir.
“Such workshops are conducted regularly worldwide, and without this training, doctors are not allowed to practice. In India, attention to such training has been limited due to other challenges, but now it is being prioritised. It is likely that in future, doctors will need to undergo this training every two years to maintain their skills and ensure better outcomes. By not doing this course repeatedly doctors are bound to forget their skills can’t maintain pace with the recent scientific developments in the world ” he added.
