Srinagar, July 24: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, in collaboration with the School Education Department, Thursday conducted a legal awareness programme at Government Higher Secondary School, Nishat, focusing on pressing legal and social issues affecting children and families.A statement issued here said that held under the chairmanship of Tasleem Arief, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Srinagar, and under the supervision of Sajad Ur Rehman, Sub-Judge and Secretary, DLSA Srinagar, the event covered vital topics including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, substance abuse, the Domestic Violence Act, and the availability of free legal aid services. Jahan Ara, Deputy Legal Aid Defence Counsel, Srinagar, led a session on the POCSO Act and drug abuse, sensitising students about the legal safeguards available to minors and the harmful consequences of substance misuse. She illustrated her talk with real-life examples and shared preventative strategies to help students protect themselves and others. Sadiya Sidiq, Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsel, addressed the gathering on the Domestic Violence Act, emphasising the importance of recognising and reporting abuse within families and communities. She also explained how free legal aid services can be accessed, particularly by marginalised and vulnerable individuals. The programme aimed to equip students with essential legal knowledge and promote a safer, drug-free, and more just society. The initiative was well received by school authorities and students alike, who expressed appreciation for the informative and empowering sessions.
