Director Agri Jammu inspects Mushroom Development Scheme

Jammu, Aug 17: Director Agriculture Jammu Arvinder Singh Reen made a significant visit to the Mushroom and Spawn Section at Krishi Bhawan Jammu, to inspect the ongoing developmental work in mushroom cultivation.
During the visit, the Director reviewed the progress made in various aspects of mushroom production and spawn development, interacting with the staff to discuss current challenges and future plans. This visit highlights the department’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and promoting mushroom farming as a viable livelihood option for farmers in the region.
During his visit, Director Reen was given an overview of the latest advancements in mushroom cultivation techniques and the ongoing research in spawn production. He visited the Controlled Conditioned Cropping Room, where 1,600 bags of Button Mushrooms are currently undergoing incubation and casing. He also inspected the Milky Mushroom Cropping Room.

Mushrooms not only offer a lucrative income alternative for farmers but also play a vital role in enhancing food security due to their substantial nutritional benefits, stated Director Reen. He highlighted the critical role of mushrooms in sustainable agriculture and the department’s commitment to integrating innovative technologies into mushroom production.

The Director was also briefed on the latest initiative under the Spawn Production Scheme, which focuses on introducing Paddy Straw Mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) to the region. This initiative includes ongoing spawn production and cultivation trials aimed at expanding the variety of high-value crops available to local farmers.

He advised the staff to encourage progressive mushroom growers from the region, to adopt advanced technologies and practices in mushroom cultivation. He underscored the importance of these innovations in improving yield quality and operational efficiency.
The Director also inspected the modern spawn production facilities, praising their role in ensuring the availability of disease-free, high-yield spawn. He commended the Mushroom and Spawn Section for its exceptional work and dedication. The team of officers, including Deputy Director (Central) Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Agriculture Chemist Dr. Aman jyoti Sharma, Mushroom Development Officer Raghuvir Pal Kochar, Spawn Production officer Verinder Dogra, Subject Matter Specialist Kewal Sharma, besides staff of the department accompanied the Director during the visit.
